Geography: Gapyeong county is a mountainous area situated in the northeast of Gyeonggi Province, and is the region where the Bukhan River and Hongcheon River merge and flow in a southeasterly direction. The region borders Chuncheon City and Hongcheon County in Kangwon Province to the east, Namyangju City in the west, Yangpyeong County in the south, and Pochun County and Whacheon County in the north. In the past, Gapyeong County was an important route from Seoul City to Chuncheon City and to the present day it is a strategic place on the central front-line.Gapyeong County is right in the middle of the Korean peninsula.
History: People have lived probably here since before the Old Stone Age, and you can find these traces throughout the county. Although relics and ruins from the Old Stone Age were not discovered, relics from the New Stone Age were discovered. A cultural place of historic interest, Hyundeung Temple from the Shilla Dynasty is located here, along with outstanding natural scenery such as Mount Unak, Muui Waterfall, and Yongchu Waterfall.
Chungpyeong Dam attracts many tourists throughout the year. Pine nuts and chestnuts are the region's specialties.
