History: Guri¡¯s old name was Gugi, which means ¡°place where the land is projected to River or sea to form a cape¡± as the Guri region is a cape surrounded by the Hangang(River) and Whangsancheon(Stream).
On March 1st, 1914, under Ministerial Ordinance Act 111, ¡°Guri¡± was founded by the partial merger of Mangwo-myeon, Gugi-myeon, and Nohae-myeon in Yangju County, and used the letter from Guji-myeon¡¯ Gu and Mangwuri-myeon¡¯s ri to take its name.
Geography: Located in the Hagok highland and joined by the Hangang(River) and Whangsookcheon(Stream), the western highland comprises Suraksan(Mountain), Bulamsan(Mountain), Gumamsan(Mountain),and A-chasan(Mountain), in the north. In the northeast over Whagsookcheon(Stream) from south to north lie Surisan(Mountain), Mount Chunguensan(Mountain), Taemyesan(Mountain), Chulmasan(Mountain), and Chunmasan(Mountain). The western A-chasan(Mountain) area and eastern plains of Whangsookcheon(Stream) create highlands in the west and lowlands in the east.
Culture: Guri City was the center of the 500-year Joseon Dynasty. As for ancient remains, there are 9 Royal Tombs from the Joseon Dynasty located in Donggu royal tombs site, and recently discovered relics from the Dynasty on A-chasan(Mountain) are being restored. The Hangang(River) and A-chasan(Mountain) create a pleasant environment. |

Goguryeo Cultural Art Festival(during October/ around Guri-si)
With the discovery of more than 1,500 valuable military relics at Mount A-cha¡®s 4th fortified castle and to promote the city¡¯s Goguryeo Dynasty¡¯s historical background, in the year 2000, Guri Cultural Arts festival was renamed Goguryeo Cultural Arts Festival. The festival is held every year.
