History: the name originated in 1459 (4th year of King Sejo). For the participation in political changes of Queen Sejo (the Yuns of Papyeong) and Queen Junghe, their hometown of Wonpyeongdohobu(ê«øÁÔ´ûÞݤ)was elevated to Mok (ÙÌ) using the first letter Pa from Yun of Pyapyeong (÷ç) and Ju (ñ¶), and renamed Paju. Also, in recognition of the hardship endured by his grandmother Queen Taejong, her home town of Yeoheung (æ¯ýé) was elevated to Yeoju (æ¯ñ¶).
Geography: Mount Gamak, Mount Nogo, and Mount Papyeong are in the region. The northwest is surrounded by the Imjinmgang(River). Munsan-eup is the last stop on the Gyungeui railroad line and Unification Road cuts through the center of the city and borders the DMZ (demilitarized zone).
Culture: The Mount Dora Railway Station and Unification Observation Hall, which were created as tourist attractions, are in the city, along with many historical/cultural assets scattered around the region, such as Sukbulipsang (stone Buddha), dolmen, royal tombs from the Joseon period including a Jang royal tomb site and tombs of famous people from the region, such as Mr. YeYe and Prime-Minister Hwanghe. |

Yulgok Cultural Festival(During Oct./Citizen hall)
