History: Ansan was originally called Janghangghyen (íïú£Ï¢úã) or Gosayahalchayeon (ͯÞÙå¥ûìóúã) in the Gogyreo period. It was
changed to Jangguhyen by King Jindeuk of Shilla and was elevated to Janggu-Gun (íïÏ¢ÏÛ) by King Shinmun. At the beginning of the Koryo period, it was changed to Ansanhyeon (äÌߣúã), and named Sokhyeon (áÕúã) in Suwon (â©ê«) by the 9th year of King Hyunjong (1018). In the 34th year of King Chungyul (1308), it was elevated to Ansan-Gun (äÌߣÏÛ) because it was the birth town of kings Dukjong, Jeongjong, and Munjong, and assigned its own governor. In the Joseon Dynasty, in the13th year of King Taejong (1413) the province administration was reorganized and an eight province system was put in place. The Ansan-Gun area was governed by an official from Gyeonggi Province.Approximately 10km southwest of Ansan was an encampment that in the 7th year of King Hyojong (1656) was moved to Ganghwa Island. However, it was still called the first Ansan encampment. The one on Gangwha Island was called the second Ansan encampment.
Geography: Ansan borders the west coast with easy access to roads and subway. In 1976, the city was rebuilt under advanced city planning after the announcement of development of Banwol New Industrial City, moving towards a high-tech, green city.
Culture: many relics from prehistoric age and remains of royal tombs from the Joseon Dynasty are found here. Sari Port & Daebu Island are famous tourist attractions. |

Sungho cultural festival(During May/Around Ansan-si)
The first Sungho Cultural Festival was held in 1996, and it is now held every year in May. Events include Sunho Ik-Lee¡¯s tribal ceremony, writing, Sungho sketch contest, and a student traditional Korean musical performance competition.

Byulmangsung Art Festival(During October/Aroun Ansan-si)
The festival started in 1987. Through combining Cultural/Arts festivals, it improved people's participation in cultural arts and enhanced community awareness. The activities include Byulmangsung mountainceremony, a handwriting competition, folk music singing contest, concert, dance performances, etc.
