History: Gwangmyeong-si¡¯s history goes back to the three nations period when it was a part of Goguryo. During King Kyungduk¡¯s 16th year (757) in the Shilla period, it was called Gowkyang-hyun in Yulgin-gun. In King Taejo¡¯s 23rd year (940) in the Koryo period, it was called Guemju-hyun, and in King Taejong¡¯s 13th year in the early part of the Joseon period, it was renamed Keumcheon-hyeon. On July 1st 1981, it was elevated to Gwnagmyeong-si.
Geography: Located in the middle of southwestern Gyeonggi Province, adjacent to the capital Seoul city, it is situated at the end of Kwangju mountain range and on a gentle plain with weathered soil around Mount Gureum. Some 40% of the total area of 38,515km2 is gentle hills.
