History: Hanam, a city with 2,000 years of history, was founded by King Onjoe of Bakjae when he designated the place a capital city. Throughout the Georyo and Joseon dynasties, the region served as an important strategic center.
Geography: The Han River flows to Seoul from Paldang Dam and opposite lies a basin area with fertile land surrounded by the Gumdan and Namhan mountains. Although development of the region was delayed by a law in 1970 prohibiting land development of 98.4% of the region¡¯s land, Hanam is now the most desirable place to live around the metropolitan area. It is striving to maintain its natural environment while at the same time developing into a future-oriented garden city. The region is important ecologically due to its well preserved environment and a basin surrounded by the Chungryang and Geomdan mountains.
Culture: the region is developing into a cultural, sports, and environmental city with beautiful scenery around Paldang Dam and prehistoric remains in Misa-ri, Iesung Fortress, a pagoda in Chungyeug-ri and a rowing/canoeing complex.
