There are no restrictions for foreigners to send their children to Korean public schools in Gyeonggi Province. Even illegal immigrants are offered admission into Korean schools for the purpose of protecting basic human rights.

Students in Korea go through a course of elementary school, middle school, highschool, and university for 6 years, 3 years,3 years, and 4 years (only 2 years for Junior College) respectively. All education before high school is compulsory in Korea. The first term for each grade begins in March and ends in late July.
Students have a summer vacation from July to August before the second term begins in September. Korean students enjoy a long winter vacation when the second term ends in mid-December until early February.
Specific rules and procedures for admission are decided by each school, so inquiries about admission should be made to the school. However, most foreigners choose to send their children to international schools instead of Korean schools. There are many international schools in Gyeonggi Province for foreigners.

Useful Information
- Children are eligible to begin schooling at the age of 6 in Korean age. (In Korea, the child   is one year old when he/she is born and adds a year at the beginning of each new   year.)
- A school attendance notification is sent 2~3 months before the start of the new school   year when the child becomes eligible for schooling. Anyone who does not receive a   notification must check with the Dong office.
- Korea has private and public schools. However, in the case of private schools,   admission is decided by drawing lots and the schooling fee is expensive.
- Most schools in Korea now follow the coeducational system.
- Elementary schools do not rank students on performance, but in middle school and high   school the classes are longer and there are many exams. Students are put through a   rigorous education course to prepare for university admission.
