Namhansanseong Fortress
Description
Built 460m high above sea level, this stone fortress was built during the Joseon era (1624). It is 9.05Km round, and 3-7.5m high. In terms of its architectural style, the surrounding areas are rugged and mountainous, while the center of the fortress is on a low and plain area. Such conditions were ideal for both defined against outside forces and for en everyday living. Among the Jangdaes (Command Posts) set up at the four cardinal points, only the Sueojangdae remains standing. It is a 2-story wooden structure that was used to guard against enemies and keep watch over surrounding areas. The fortress is also the site where our ancestors surrendered to the Quing Dynasty after resisting for more than 45 days during King Injo's 14th year of reign (1636).
